Seeing the 21st Century Hongbyeokseo “Inside Record”

Source: Reporter Kim Ah Yeon’s Blog 12-10-22 14:13:08 [T/N: She is the O2 webzine/Dong-a Ilbo. reporter who interviewed Ah In and wrote a very long article on October 21, 2010.]

O2 Interview

Two weeks ago, I met Yoo Ah In. Through the “Sungkyunkwan Scandal,” [his] popularity has been growing rapidly (although Ah In himself feels that the phrase of “the rapid growth” is too exaggerated, even a little annoying). It was not easy to see Yoo Ah In. Two other people [T/N: they are probably other reporters] went unconditionally. With my request, time finally compressed and [I] went to the site for archery where I saw Ah In.

Arriving at the location, the shooting was already finished. Ah In already changed into his regular clothes and was waiting over there. The regular clothes were really… Although I wrote this in the article, too, he was wearing a baseball cap slightly pressed down on his head and a puffy down coat. His pants were shorts. His shoes were Ugg boots. As soon as I saw him, I said, “Ah In-ssi, you had absolutely no intention of taking pictures today!” But, the strange thing was that this terrible outfit somehow fit him quite well and suited him too.

In fact, I was a bit afraid of interviewing Ah In. Because among [his] fans, Ah In’s nickname is “writer,” or “poet.” After reading the texts he posted on his mini-hompy, I felt even more timid. The texts are the type that is not easy to understand after reading it once. His tweets on Twitter are called “Twitter Byeokseo” by [his] fans. Although the text appears to be posted as a joke, it really is the same text as the “Byeokseo.”

Red Byeokseo

Just like anyone who already prepared what to say, [I] started writing a bunch of questions slowly on the A4 size paper and ready to start the interview. However, less than five minutes into the interview, those prepared questions became useless. Generally, when interviewing, [one will] prepare questions for about the length of an A4 size paper. In terms of the number of the questions, it is about 35~40. This kind of preparation for an hour interview should have no problem.

But, for Ah In, these obvious questions would not work. When facing these obvious questions, Ah In really showed that he was bored. Ha ha What a cruel actor. So, [we] started chatting. This was the only way to hear answers of Ah In’s style.

[He is] really not a simple man. Even when choosing a word, it was not easy. I asked, “is that a bias?” Ah In said, “instead of ‘bias,’ ‘forcing’ this word is a little bit better” to amend my word.

The news was published sincerely. But in fact, the atmosphere during the interview was full of laughter. “Although there had been time that [I was] non-mainstream and did not know the reality, to some extent, [I was] also looking for a compromise. Taking care of my body and finding ways to communicate. Slowly, it guided me to move forward. I think that was how I got here.” This fox-like [tricky, clever] actor was sincerely answering questions even as he occasionally burst into laughter and showed how relaxed he felt. I also can’t forget the eye-smile aegyo he kept sending. “I reply this way. How will the news be written?” “When will the news come out? Very curious about how it will come out?” Even as he asked these questions, he said everything he wanted to say steadily and well. “How come I have so much to say?” Even as he said this, it seemed like Ah In already knew he had many thoughts he wanted to share, so he couldn’t help but have a lot to say. Although I [do remember] personally thinking that if he spoke a bit more simply, more people would understand him. Ha ha.

Ah In has an entertainment phobia. Even if attending an entertainment program for promoting a film, [he is] the type that does not show up in too many frames. So, the entertainment phobia was created by himself, I think. “Yoo Ah In does not go to entertainment programs.” There are such false rumors. He said it was not like that. “It is not that I can’t do it well. [I] just don’t do it.” “My position is not a top star. If I attend an entertainment program, it will give me a lot of publicity. But, I feel inconvenient [because] there will be an obligation to be funny.” “When I can relax more and be funner when communicate, I will go.” But, Ah In’s last words were particularly interesting. “Entertainment should really be entertainment, but because I’m a bit serious, it would be more like an educational program…hahaha.”

Through Sungkyunkwan Scandal, [he] knew many actors, [and] same age friends. With no friend in entertainment field, through this TV drama, Ah In acted with other entertainers who are the same age [as he is]. Acting with Park Min young, Song Joong Ki, and Park Yoo Chun, [Ah In] got rid of these prejudices. “Although I am an entertainer, those [other] entertainers are really making people tiring.” “Those peers give me a headache.” After finishing the TV drama, [I would] also like to keep in touch. [What he meant here is] Song Joong Ki. “[I] would like to be friend with an entertainer.” There were times that, as an actor, [Song Joong Ki] was on the side giving him applause. [Ah In] also felt that he learned a lot from him.

After communicating with Yoo Chun, [Ah In] found out that he is an interesting person. He was afraid that people would have biases against him because he is an idol and has the identity of a super star. So, he first came close to everyone, [and worked] quite hard. Knowing these, it made me feel even more that he is a lovely person who is worth of the appreciation. “Although there were many aspects that [Yoo Chun] could be at the top position, he shattered his own identity. I am not making myself comfortable, instead, making others comfortable. Being a mature star, [he is] a very good person.” [Ah In] even said, “the Jalgeum Four could feel Yoo Chun’s love.”

This interesting interview was over. Although the interview was very interesting, as news, the flows and transitions were not very easy. This fox-like actor knew this very clearly. When writing the news, I always thought of what Ah In said, “It is not easy to express my words in writing.” Whenever that happened, I thought of what he said, “Next time, we have to meet again.”

The interview was over. When thinking back, his outfit appears in front of me. Sometime is warm. Sometime is cool. During the interview, [the feeling] was really matched with his outfit that was both summer and winter clothes at the same time.

After the interview news was out, I looked at all different fan sites. Many people said [they] like to see the Ah In who was being recording. So, [I will] open a little. Wanting himself to be edited well, when Ah In talked, his fingers were like making cuts with the rhythm of his words. You can imagine it.

[Note: I translated this piece from a Chinese translation done by jijing1985 of Ah In Baidu. Therefore, it is very possible that there are some interpretations might not be exact or might even be lost. So, jaeshinah, InK, and ancientkingdom, please do jump in if you see something that need to be elaborated or corrected. It will be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks!]

  1. Oh this is the reporter’s blog post about her interview with Ah In! I remember jaeshinah and I had a discussion of whether we should translate it, because the reporter said in her blog that she doesn’t want fans to circulate/repost this around.

I guess there is no problem with translating (since if we know Korean we can read it anyway on her blog). Thank you so much, baidu fans and mathed2001 for your hard work!

        • Congrats on your first post! I know the feeling =)! I haven’t read the entire writtings , just bits and pieces but…from what I’ve read he’s amazing. ..Thanks for sharing!

Ok, back to work! Goodness, i’m panicking right now, too many work..so little time…

    • Hmm… I don’t know… That is a big question mark… So, did you and jaeshinah decide not to translate? Oh, why did I pick this questionable one to do? >< I am so sorry to cause the problem… Just let me know if you think we should take it down…

  2. ohh wow…he’s really a complicated guy isn’t he…lol
@”fox-like actor”…but seriously who wouldn’t be nervous around yoo ah in
    who’s really witty!…

  3. Yay!! mathed2001!!!!
You are on the board finally!! thanks for your hard work!! I remember leaving a comment on this reoporter’s blog when the article was out. I almost forgot about her blog for a while, but actually when i revisted the blog for the first time in a long time, i saw that she had replied to my comment. which is really nice of her!
I wonder if you speak Korean at all. Do you speak Chinese and English?? or Korean as well?? well, doesn’t really matter cuz korean vocabs are based on different formation of chinese characters anyway.

One thing I noticed is taht instead of enternainer, celebrity would be more accurate (well, they mean the same thing but) YAI doen’t really show his entertainer’s side yet. That’s the phobia he has. Talk-show-phobia! It’s not that he can’t talk, but the pressure he gets that he has to be funny on the talk shows…isn’t that pleasing to him. YAI also said, “When I appear on talk shows, the shows often become documentaries.” (TBS becomes PBS~ in other words! ;)).

I wonder what the origianl text said about his “rotten” image though. I couldn’t really picture that image to be rotten.. Let me come back to this point later after i review her blog once again~

    Thanks a bunch, mathed2001!!!

  4. HELLO!!!!
Yay I’m so glad you translated this~! I actually emailed the reporter and asked her if we could translate her blog post, but she never got back to me. Hahaha. So I think it’s okay. It’s up on the internet, after all, and we give her credit=) I don’t have time to go through this carefully right now, but here are some things I looked up:

    — This regular clothes was really… Although all the news said that Ah In had the “rotten” image, it was really interesting that he had a baseball cap on and wore a duvet coat. The pants were shorts. Shoes were boots. As soon as I saw him, I said, “Ah In, you do not feel like taking pictures.” [Corrected] –> The regular clothes were really… Although I wrote this in the article, too, he was wearing a baseball cap slightly pressed down on his head and a puffy down coat. His pants were shorts. His shoes were Ugg boots. As soon as I saw him, I said, “Ah In-ssi, you had absolutely no intention of taking pictures today!”
(The “rotten” translation happened, I think, because in Korean, “rotten” and “[I] wrote” are really similar when written. “썩다” (rotten) v. “썼다” (wrote))

    — This fox-like actor was sincerely answering questions while revealing the capability of continuous smile. I can not forget, in that smile, there was some testing ingredients. [Corrected] –> This fox-like [she means tricky, clever] actor was sincerely answering questions even as he occasionally burst into laughter and showed how relaxed he felt. I also can’t forget the eye-smile aegyo he kept sending.
(aegyo is the Korean word for “acting cute.” A lot of foreign fans know it as a Korean word (like oppa, unnie, etc.) so I usually don’t translate it. But you know when celebrities go on TV and the girls put on a high whiny voice and pretend to pout and hit their boyfriends on the arm, or something like that? that’s aegyo! So Ah In wasn’t testing the reporter. He was acting cute with her. LOL)

    — On one hand, [he was] talking like this. On the other hand, [he was] speaking out all he wanted to say whirringly. “How come I have so much to say?” Talking in such a way, Ah In already knew he has many thoughts and wanted to show a lot. Beside talking, it seems that there is no other method. I personally hope that if Ah In can talk a bit simply, it will make more people understand [him]. [Corrected] –> Even as he asked these questions, he said everything he wanted to say steadily and well. “How come I have so much to say?” Even as he said this, it seemed like Ah In already knew he had many thoughts he wanted to share, so he couldn’t help but have a lot to say. Although I [do remember] personally thinking that if he spoke a bit more simply, more people would understand him.
[따박따박 is the word I translated as “steadily” but if I’m not mistaken, it has the connotation of saying something carefully and correctly, like a good student. It’s not robotic, but it’s clearly thought-out beforehand. He’s sure of what he wants to say.]

    — “Entertainment is really entertainment. When I appear sincerely, it seems as [I am] well educated. Ha ha.” [Corrected] –> “Entertainment should really be entertainment, but because I’m a bit serious, it would be more like an educational program…hahaha”

I hope this helps!!! I’ll go back and read this more carefully when I have the time, but I’ve got to run ^^ You did a fantastic job, mathed2001~! Thank you for translating this =) Considering the difficulties of translation, and especially translation into TWO languages–Chinese and then English.. omg–I’m absolutely amazed at how accurately and precisely so much of the meaning was preserved. Fantastic job!!

    • Thank you, jaeshinah~~ Now, I see where the word “rotten” came from… And, there are some details in her original text that were missing in the Chinese translation.

“I also can’t forget the eye-smile aegyo he kept sending.” Wow, just imaging sitting across YAI and seeing him sending those eye-smile aegyo… Ah… But, seriously, I just learn a new word – aegyo~~ 🙂

With you clarification, now I see why InK said YAI can make TBS becomes PBS… Ha ha…

And thank you for your kind words… I am glad that most of the meaning was preserved. That was one of my worries… being translating from Chinese to English (instead from Korean to English). Thank you~~

  5. I am feel he’s not easy, but that doesn’t mean complex … he was just following conscience … he was full of depth (and I’m drowning) … sometime I wonder why my YAI never appeared on entertainment programs, answer that he felt wasn’t a top artist shows that he was really humble. … he was just following him conscience … and may also avoid over-expose … thought wise …. gosh I love him more… and I was drowning

  6. Thank you for continuously updating YAIHaven with new postings … I am thoroughly enjoying myself here. I keep picturing Ah In in shorts+boots+jacket+cap LOL … I find his ‘phobia’ of appearing in entertainment program extremely adorable … “.. But, I feel inconvenient [because] there will be an obligation to be funny.” –> so cute!
    Thanks mathed2001 and jaeshinah!

  7. thanks for the translation. ^^
i think it is not only the reporter who are afraid to interview YAI, i also feel scared to write to him too.. what if what i write is rubbish, what if things i write do no good but waste his time reading instead etc etc.. >.<

  8. Thank you so much mathed2001 for the translation and Jaeshinah for your further explanatin. You both made a complete versions of the articles. Kamsahamnida!

I adore YAI’s truly unique personality, sense of fashions and his “phobia”. I love this part best ~~ I “Entertainment should really be entertainment, but because I’m a bit serious, it would be more like an educational program…hahaha
    SMEXY!! LOL! Bold statement!!

  9. I think Ah In is not only an actor, but also an artist who passing the passion to eveyone’s life.
Since I know about him, my life has never be the same.
Hope everyone continues this amazing site . Bravo for your hardwork and the love towards Ah In.

  10. awww…i’m envious of the reporter…

how i wish I were able to witness the interview to see YAI with his eye smile aegyo or just to listen to his voice as I don’t fully understand Korean anyway….sigh! (dreaming!)

  11. hey mathed2001—sorry to nag, but sometimes our english translations are translated into thai or vietnamese or other languages…. before the mistranslations are spread to other sites, would you mind editing your original post and correcting some of the parts that could be misunderstood? i don’t mind doing it if you don’t have time, but i don’t want to trample on your territory ^^
